How to use Instagram and Twitter slideshows at events in San Francisco

How the AIDS LifeCycle bike ride used an Instagram and Twitter Slideshow for their Charity Event

A photo prop is a great way to increase user generated content

A perfect example of how to bring a crowd together and use an Instagram and Twitter slideshow at a big charity event can be seen with the AIDS LifeCycle SF to LA bike ride. This is 7-day bike ride charity event from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise money and awareness in the fight against HIV/AIDS. By using a real-time Instagram slideshow and Twitter photo feed this landmark charity bike ride through beautiful California provided an interactive experiential event to thousands of participants from all over the world. Instagram and Twitter photos were shared on social media and streamed live onto big screens at the end of the race. Fans, family, friends and the rest of the crowd could then instantly see photos of the participants crossing the finish line in San Francisco.

Casio's G-Shock Instagram Wall in New York

A live Instagram wall is a great way to entertain your guests and increase social media exposure at the same time. This is perfect for large events in New York, as can be seen with Casio’s 50 year G-shock celebration!

Here, they used a custom-designed Instagram feed and Twitter photo slideshow to interact with their fans and entertain the crowds alongside an Eminem concert in Manhattan, New York. Following the success of this, Casio have installed an in-store live social media photo slideshow in their Soho store in New York!

Campus Party & Eventstagram

What is Campus Party?

Campus Party (CP) is an annual week-long, 24 hour a day technology festival and LAN Party. Thousands of hackers, developers, gamers and geeks equipped with laptops camp out in tents on-site for the conference and hackathon.

However Campus Party is also for entrepreneurs, DJs, business transformers and amateur astronomers - anyone looking to solve a problem with technology. Therefore, needless to say, the O2 was filled with fascinating people!

Our favourite moments included watching keynotes such as Vint Cerf, the Vice President and Chief Internet Evangelist for Google, with his discussion on the ‘internet of things’. Whilst seemingly sci-fi, the things he was discussing are actually in progress! Here is him photographed with melissa@eventstagr.am !!

During women in tech day, Mitchell Baker, leader of the Mozilla Project was incredibly passionate about her field and the extremely inspirational female leader, Julie Meyer, of Ariadne Capital gave a brilliant quote:

“Entrepreneurs are willing to live abnormal lives” - Julie Meyer

Here you can see the screens that were playing Eventstagram’s live social media feeds of the events (images which were uploaded onto Instagram and Twitter by the crowd, hashtagged with #cpeurope and then streamed directly onto the big screen) before and in between the speakers.

The Top 50 Mobile Innovators Awards Ceremony

Representatives from the top 50 mobile innovators were brought together in the city last week. Grant Thornton hosted the event at Old Billingsgate. Five lucky winners gained consultancy services from their growth accelerator.

After initial networking, the crowd were greeted by the fabulously inspiring gaming veteran and founder of 22 Cans - Peter Molyneux. He discussed the past success of the social gaming project ‘What’s in the Cube’ and also their new crowd-funded Godus title. Quote of the night nicely tweeted by organiser Zen:

Zen Doll@ZenTerrelonge :Peter Molyneux: "That bastard Steve Jobs changed my life forever"

This is a slide of all the amazing start-ups represented in the top 50 Mobile Innovators:

Some of our favourites were:

Yplan - All about the hottest spontaneous events in London which can be booked with two taps - usually with a discount too! We like!

Citymapper - The simplest mapping service, now in London and New York. Watch out Google maps!

MagicSolver - A Cambridge award winning app discovery company, who answer the question to over 30m users in 120 countries - “What new app can I download today?”

Shazam - No longer just an audio discovery app, they can now detect TV and film too, they also just got $40m investment in July! Lucky!

and of course...Eventstagram :-)

O24G using Eventstagram's Instagram and Twitter Slideshows

O24G Blog

On 29th of August 2013, O2 switched on 4G in London with an exclusive Plan B concert. They streamed this gig live across the city and also used Eventstagram to display live social media slideshows on the large screens. With this software, the crowd uploaded photos to Instagram and Twitter as they normally would, with a particular hashtag, which is picked up by this web app’s software and was displayed in real time in all three central London digital media locations; Kings Cross Station, Victoria Station and The Wall at Westfield Shepherd’s Bush. This meant that everyone in each location could share the moment with fans in the other locations too.

Plan B performed to an audience of 2,000 people at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire as well as to the crowds at the live-streamed locations. Audiences at Kings Cross and Victoria Stations were given O2 headphones to enjoy the gig as a live-streamed silent disco.  Fans at home could also check the gig out live on Youtube!

In all of these locations, as well as the Shepherds Bush Empire, Eventstagram was intermittently shown as people entered the venue and also between the support acts and Plan B’s performance. Buskers were taking requests from the crowd, which created a great atmosphere, many of which were recorded on Instagram and ended up on the slideshow. O2’s social media team handled the moderation of Eventstagram’s service remotely from Glasgow!

When people saw their hashtagged photos and videos from Instagram and Twitter appearing in real time on the screens in front of them, there were massive spikes in social media. The crowd went crazy and even began to take photos of their photos on the screen! When normal advertising came back onto the screens, the social media output from the crowd decreased. This shows how effective live streaming of social media can be in the amplification of brand and peer-to-peer advertising.

With the use of Eventstagram’s reporting dashboard, we can see that 261 people shared 544 Photos & Videos, 377 Tweets, 91 Retweets, 1721 Likes giving this event a total outreach of 3311286 people!  Imagine!

The Social Media Season: Instagram at Sports Stadiums.

Passionate sports fans expect to connect to the game on a whole new level than before. Looking around the stadium, vast numbers of fans have their phones out: taking photos and videos; uploading them to Instagram and Twitter; giving updates and insights on the game through Facebook and checking in with FourSquare, to let friends know they are at the match. It has become expected to be able to use smartphones and Wi-Fi connectivity within sports stadiums, to do all of these things.

One football club who is taking this social media wave by storm, with a compelling in-stadium experience is Barcelona, who currently has the most liked Facebook page
in global sports and 815,947 followers on Instagram. Barça FC’s Camp Nou recently teamed up with Telefonica to provide Wifi within the stadium. Barça understand the importance of social media, for example, for the final at Wembley, more than 6,000 Twitter messages were sent per second and Barça received more than a million mentions around the world.
This isn’t just a European trend though. A Mashable article highlights how social media is changing the NFL. Former defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans John Thornton says. "Twitter has changed everything."
"Social media has taken the place of autographs” Thornton states, “Before, you wanted players' autographs, now you want players to say something back to you on Twitter."

Whilst of course sports teams are doing this for fan engagement, new business opportunities can hardly be ignored.

Revenue Generating Opportunities
Sean Walsh, (Founder of Digital-Football and leading Football Social Media expert) believes that venues around the world should be taking advantage of the user generated visual content created in their stadiums and showcasing it on their big screens. Tens of thousands of fans on their mobile devices want to connect to their favourite brands and are also creating new revenue-generating opportunities.
1. Sponsorship and advertising – can tailor their messages, which can be shown on the big screen intermittently between social media and targeted to different areas such as VIP or club areas.
2. Customized and targeted promotions – Every event can be turned into a customized experience with branded digital content based on fan demographics.
3. Exclusive fan services – Social media at events give fans an opportunity to participate in—and pay for—exclusive, in-stadium services such as special video channels or instant access to team stats. Premium seats or VIP Club access with instant upgrades could also be sold.
